We love insta! In fact you could say we’re a bit obsessed. How many times have we trawled tags and been confronted with gorgeous people doing gorgeous things. But we have a bit of beef. We recently saw this super courageous vid by the beautiful Marina De Goivanni (watch the video below if you’re curious) and she showed us just how easy it is to edit the crap outta your insta posts to give you a smaller waist, a thigh gap and ridiculous photoshopped other bits that all our guilty pleasure mags do on a daily basis. BUT Marina did this in less than 10 minutes, all on her phone. No high-tech equipment, no editing whiz behind the screen, just her and her phone. IT’S NOT REAL! We were so shocked that people are actually doing this. Now Marina’s message was super clear to us, by showing us just how easy it is to modify your figure for the world to see it’s totally obvious that after everything we’ve been through as a human race, everything that women all around the world have championed for decades (BE YOURSELF, YOURSELF IS PERFECT) we’re still not even close yet.
In her blog post Marina said, “A few years ago I never would have entertained the idea of putting a photo of myself on Social Media, let alone “#InMyCalvins”…
I’ve learned to love myself and be content + happy with who I am and what I look like…
I’m not perfect…neither are you.
(And neither are many influencers who alter their bodies in photos, like I have here.)”
So why is it that lovely ladies feel the need to alter their image to be attractive? More often than not, an altered image is an altered sense of confidence and ladies, we need true confidence and we need it now.
What is it that is achieved by photoshopping a curvier waist-line? Seriously, where is it going to get you?
Research has proven that there’s a correlation between a person’s level of self worth and their perception of their body image. Remember, body image is just that, it’s one’s own perception of it.
The Center for Young Women’s Health in the US states:
“Sometimes the way you think other people are judging your appearance can affect your body image. Poor body image comes from negative thoughts and feelings about your appearance, and a healthy body image is made up of thoughts and feelings that are positive. Why work on your self-esteem?
Self-esteem gives us the ability to believe in ourselves. It gives us the confidence to make healthy choices for our minds and bodies and it gives us the courage to try new things. Ladies, you’re not going to take over the world by sitting on your backsides staring at yourself in the mirror.
So how can you fix this for yourself?
Focus on your favourite bits, the bits that make you you. Which let’s be honest – is EVERY SINGLE BIT!
But all my friends are doing it?
Ah yes, that old chestnut. Be an inspiration. Encourage your friends to do the same.
Appreciate the hell outta your body, junk and all. It’s all you got in the end and if you treat it right and don’t hurt its feelings it can take you places you’ve only dreamed of.
